The WriteMix is hosting its’ first quarterly writers’ retreat which is perfect for aspiring, unpublished writers who are ready to invest in their crafts and jump start their projects. With a focus on novel writing, playwriting, and screenwriting, writers will leave the retreat with a treatment, synopsis, outline, or the first renderings of a draft for their projects. The interactive story and character development workshops will be collaborative, however, there will be breakout sessions facilitated by experienced writers in the genres of screenplays, stage plays, and novels.
The WriteMix Retreat will be held Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 9am-5pm at the Fogelman Executive Center, located on the campus of the University of Memphis across from the Fogelman College of Business and Economics on Innovation Drive. The state of the art facility offers ample parking, free Wi-Fi access as well as spacious classrooms and two dining rooms. Breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack will be served and included with your registration.

About the Workshops
Story Development:
This workshop offers solid tips on how to construct a story idea prior to writing. Learn about the benefits of research, observation, and angles as well as determine the most appropriate genre for crafting the story idea. We promise that this one hour workshop will be engaging and interactive.
Character Development:
Bland, one dimensional characters can kill a good story idea. This workshop will offer the best ways to prevent this from happening and help you, as the author, get the most from the characters who will drive your story and connect with your readers.

Chandra Kamaria is the Founder/CEO and Senior Playwright of Harkins House Productions. As a playwright, essayist, poet, blogger, and author, Chandra's vision is to expand the body of work involving African Americans and preserve the richness of the Black Experience. This Mississippi native has been deeply engrossed in Black literature for well over 25 years; boasting of an extensive collection of works by several well-known and obscure Black authors. This unquenchable interest in literature eventually led Chandra to theatre. Through a continual process of self-study and honing the craft of playwriting, Chandra launched Harkins House Productions in March 2010 and, in November of that same year, debuted its first original stage play, FOUR WOMEN, at the Evergreen Theatre in Memphis. The show ran for one weekend with nearly three sold out audiences. Chandra wrote and directed this play as well as the second HHP production, The Man Store, which debuted with rave reviews in May 2013 and an encore weekend in November of the same year. The production was also nominated for a 2013 Best in Black Award presented by The Tri-State Defender.
